Boxwood Combs
Functional Objects
These hand-carved combs are designed with the specific task of combing stray hairs behind the ear. They are inspired by research into Japanese comb culture. They are made from boxwood and treated with Camelia oil which nourishes both the comb and hair.
In Japan, combing hair is seen as a ritualistic and meditative task, as hair is believed to collect spirits. As you comb through the hair, you collect the spiritual energy within it. For this reason, it’s bad luck to share or borrow someone’s comb. The word for comb in Japanese is kushi and is associated with misfortune as ‘ku’ also means suffering and ‘shi’ means death. People only give combs as presents with money to counter any bad luck.
