Wooden Alphabet
Experiments in Lettering Design
Wood and stone carvers usually have sample alphabets carved in traditional Roman lettering in order to showcase their skill to prospective clients.
The wooden alphabet project takes inspiration from this tradition but employs a more creative approach by using a different style for each letter. The idea stemmed from an obsession with the endless different typeface designs spanning the decades on shop and pub signs across London.
The types of wood include oak, cherry, lime, pine, olive, tulip and unknown found hardwoods. Materials used include 23.5 carat gold leaf, silver leaf, enamel paint, mahogany veneer, and a chrome graffiti pen. Finally, the finishes range from varnish, flame-burning, olive oil, and wax.
The varying designs and colours of the letters are unified by their participation in the wider alphabet. Their design nods to the traditions of printing and historic innovations in type including gothic manuscripts, graffiti culture and American sign writing. These letters are available to buy or can be commissioned, any letter in any style.
